Audi A8 3.0 TDI
For the UK market, the choice of A8s will be limited to a V6 engines – a 3.0-litre TFSI turbo petrol with 282bhp and a 3.0-litre TDI turbodiesel with 334bhp. But the range will expand to include a 4.0-litre V8 petrol, a 3.0-litre PHEV (available with induction charging) and eventually a W12-petrol.
Both 3.0-litre engines in the UK models are described as ‘mild hybrids,’ which means they employ a 48-volt electrical system, can coast with the engine shut down and have extended stop-start intervals. They’re evolutions of the existing power units, but both deliver better fuel consumption, lower power, more power and improved responsiveness over their predecessors.
Should I buy one?
The new A8, although little different in appearance, is a clear step forward, but despite big changes to its suspension set-up, it still fails to match the competition for dynamic finesse and its ride is best described as ordinary.

You can take your kids to soccer practice in style thanks to the A8’s two full sets of LATCH child-seat connectors. Almost any type of car seat will fit with ease thanks to the huge rear seats, but you might have trouble connecting the seat because the lower anchors are hard to access.

The Audi A8 has just over 14 cubic feet of trunk space, which is smaller than virtually every other trunk in the class. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has nearly 19 cubic feet of trunk space, and the Porsche Panamera has nearly 16 cubic feet with the rear seats up (the Panamera is a hatchback with a maximum cargo capacity of 44.6 cubic feet with the seats down). Still, the A8 has enough space for a weekly trip to the grocery store or a cooler and a couple of chairs if you’re heading out on a picnic.
A8 Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation
The 2017 A8 is getting a little up there in years (it hasn’t been redesigned since 2011), and that shows up in the MMI infotainment system. It doesn’t have the level of smartphone integration that some rival systems do (the A8 isn’t available with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto), and its touch-screen display doesn’t respond to pinch or swipe movements. However, if you don’t mind that it’s a little stale, the MMI system is still intuitive, and the A8 has some other excellent technology, including a navigation system that’s among the best.
