Audi R8 Spyder V10 Plus Ad Might Make You Dizzy
At €207,500 in Germany, the new R8 Spyder V10 Plus is Audi’s most expensive new car money can buy. While that’s certainly a lot of money, it’s still five times cheaper than the ill-fated electric R8 E-Tron axed last year after abysmal sales of “fewer than 100 examples.”
The people from Ingolstadt introduced their most powerful convertible earlier this week and now the car is making its video debut in a promotional clip released on the company’s German YouTube channel.
Like it was the case with the official images, the model is being presented with the optional micrommata green pack available only for this car and part of the Audi Exclusive portfolio. In case you might not have noticed, the firm’s corporate grille no longer hosts the “Quattro” badge as it has been replaced by “Audi Sport.” Why? Because the four-ring automaker has decided to change the name of its go-faster division from Quattro GmbH to Audi Sport GmbH. It’s only the name that’s changing as development will continue in Neckarsulm, Germany and Stephan Winkelmann will still call the shots.
The R8 Spyder V10 Plus can drop its top in 20 seconds, which is the exact same amount of time necessary to put the soft roof back up. Both procedures can be done at speeds of up to 31 mph (50 kph). The fabric roof weighs 97 pounds (44 kilograms) and when it’s folded it sits in a special compartment above the V10 engine.
Speaking of which, the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter is carried over from the R8 Coupe V10 Plus and represents Audi’s most powerful series-production engine ever made: 610 hp (449 kW) and 413 pound-feet (560 Newton-meters). That’s enough Audi Sport punch to enable the topless machine reach 62 mph (100 kph) in 3.3 seconds and max out at 204 mph (328 kph).

Deliveries of the latest Audi Sport model will start late this summer in Europe. This will remain the company’s most expensive car for the time being and the only model it could dethrone it would be a low-volume hypercar Winkelmann briefly talked about earlier this year.
