The new 2.0 TFSI engine

EvEry yEar, audi manages to present something new at the vienna Motor Symposium. This year, it presented a new version of the 2.0 TFSI engine which, although it does not yet have outstanding output, incorporates an innovative combustion system.
TECHNOLOGY
This unit develops a modest 190 PS, with maximum torque of 320 Nm (236 lb.ft.), but is very economical, and the maximum torque is available all the way from 1450 to 4400 rpm. It is expected that production will start towards the end of this year when the engine will be fitted to the new A4.

The important aspect of this new engine is the new combustion method which, in principle, is similar to the Miller cycle, but differs in certain crucial ways. Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Head of Engine Development at audi, explains, ‘The new powerplant enjoys the fuel consumption benefits of a downsized engine in partial load operation, while, at higher loads, it has the advantages of a large displacement unit. The result is optimal efficiency and performance characteristics across the entire engine speed range.’
